The Challenge

PX-ENABLED NANOFILTRATION FOR EFFICIENT SODA ASH PRODUCTION IN CHINA

The Shandong Haihua Group, a public salt chemical company, needed to drastically increase soda production to meet growing regional needs from manufacturers of solar panels and lithium batteries for electric vehicles. The company could no longer rely on its traditional salt lake dry land production method of extracting salts to meet the Na2CO3 production spike in demand. Soda ash (sodium carbonate) is a critical ingredient in the production of high-purity glass for solar panels and is used in refining lithium for EV batteries, making it essential to the green energy supply chain. As global demand for clean energy technologies accelerates, scaling up soda production has become a strategic priority.

The production team sought to develop a novel nanofiltration design to concentrate brine for soda production, but they needed to ensure that the process could be sustainable, both in terms of operational reliability and energy efficiency.
